A major new initiative to equip researchers with the skills needed to tackle the planet’s most pressing ecological challenges is happening.
The Green Talent project is launching two specialised training schools dedicated to Research and Innovation (R&I) support, knowledge valorisation (turning research into practical, socio-economic value), and pioneering research focused on addressing the biodiversity and climate crises through systemic solutions.
The First Training School is officially scheduled for December 1 to 3, 2026, in Sofia, Bulgaria and is open for applications.
Sharpening the Tools of Modern Science
The three-day intensive event aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world impact. In addition to the focus on scientific approaches to address biodiversity and climate challenges together, the attendees will dive into practical, critical pillars of modern research support.
Among the topics that the programme will include are:
Core scientific frameworks: Foundational modules covering biodiversity decline and strategies for climate resilience.
Systemic and Nature-Based Solutions: Exploring NbS and systemic frameworks through social science perspectives and business POVs.
Open Data Sharing & Science Communication: Learning how to make scientific findings transparent, accessible, and effectively communicated to the public and policymakers.
Infrastructure & Grant Management: Mastering the logistics of running complex research projects and navigating grant administration.
Legal Compliance: Understanding the regulatory frameworks that govern international environmental research.
Co-Creating a Landmark Special Issue
A major highlight of the event will be an exclusive workshop led by the University of Helsinki. The workshop is dedicated to designing a special issue focused on the Biodiversity-Climate-Society Nexus. More information in the upcoming months.
Key Information for Applicants
Format: Strictly in-person execution. No hybrid or remote attendance options are available for the training school or co-creation sessions.
Cost: Registration and participation in the school are completely free.
Travel: Attendees must self-fund their own travel and accommodation in Sofia.
Call for Applications Now Open
Applications are officially open to stakeholders and early career researchers (ECRs) whose work supports or directly involves biodiversity, climate crisis solutions, and the wider goals of the GREEN TALENT project.
Because spots are limited, a selection committee will review all submissions. Successful applicants will be contacted directly with registration confirmations and venue details.
Deadline for applications: 16th of August 2026.
The applicants will be informed if they have been selected in early September.
