In Sifnos (Greece), as well as in several other Aegean islands, Nature-based Solutions can help address multiple environmental challenges (water security, climate change adaptation, soil erosion, land degradation, etc). Through our recent project on the installation of small stone weirs, we are exploring how these traditional landscape features can be used as nature-based infrastructure to:

    • retain moisture and increase water infiltration
    • reduce runoff and soil erosion
    • improve the resilience of the island’s landscape to extreme rainfall events
    • support biodiversity

On top of the above benefits, which contribute to improved water availability and ecosystem health, this technique can help preserve Mediterranean islands' cultural landscape and traditional knowledge; social and economic benefits for local communities are thus created.

This approach demonstrates how traditional practices can be combined with contemporary NbS to address climate and environmental challenges, and also deliver benefits for both people and nature.
